Happy St Patrick's day rant! (spoilers)
Mar. 17th, 2006 11:44 pmJust got back from “V for vendetta” and while there were some good parts and bad parts, something stuck with me:
They changed a main aspect of V’s character.
Y’see; V does believe fully in what he says, and he does care about the people he’s involved with, albeit distantly; but he doesn’t hold punches or apologize to them. The most glaring aspect of this change is in the scene with Evey late in the movie. As she’s shouting at the devil about how he’s a monster, and the things he does, he starts in on how he felt remorse for his actions. In the book? He tries to explain his screwed-up logic to her.
Part of what makes the darling little anarchist who he is, is the fact that what happened in his past stripped him of many aspects of his humanity; it’s part of the counter-balance that’s supposed to be shown with the Leader (even though being a rat-bastard and all) having some aspects of human nature. It’s an important part of the book that keeps showing him being almost inhuman in nature. Yes he’s got charisma and wit, but there are many enchanting monsters in the world of literature.
V, in short; will manipulate you, torture you, break your mind into little tiny pieces, kill you, and destroy all you hold dear- all of that just to prove a point or to do something that’s for your “good”. And yanno what? He won’t ever think it’s wrong; he won’t sugar-coat things for you, and he won’t back off until he thinks you’ve learned whatever he wanted you to. Yes he will also read you bedtime stories, but he won’t give them a happy ending if they didn’t start out with one. Part of his belief system is giving people total free will, and for him that sometimes means tearing off the rose-tinted shades. Are these actions right? Most likely not; but to V they are needed to make the world supposedly a better place, and that’s all that matters to him.
No, he’s not a charming rogue who has deep down inside a soft heart; he is a sociopath, one with a strongly defined set of morals, but still utterly crazy and a tyrant in his own special way.
But at least he’ll make you a nice dish of toad-in-the-hole.
