Review one
I still haven’t finished Deathnote’s current chapters (mainly because I’m dodging bullets regarding mom and the most recent hp book) but in the past week or so I purchased a few cd’s on a whim. Aaand since I’m feeling more pretentious then normal, I feel like giving these things a long, hard reviewing.
Artist: Garbage
Album: Bleed Like Me
1. Bad boyfriend: A piece of ear candy at best, a little thing that is the right sort of music to play in the background, but not anything that will grab your attention with the lyrics or melody. The female singer talks about a relationship that is purely for show on both ends. Meh, I’ve heard the concept done much better; and for an opening song, this is pretty flimsy ground to start off with. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t make me feel confident about the rest of the album.
2. Run baby run: A much better selection then the last piece. I think this album is headed in a much more west-coast feeling then the last few. The song pertains to a woman giving advice to a younger girl/her inner child/lesbian lover. My opinion is on the third option.
No I mean it; I think it might just be the third one. Shirley Manson has these odd turns of phrases in her albums that I’ve only heard between very close female friends or females of the lesbotastic persuasion. That and the very aggressive/using nature she has towards males… it makes me wonder sometimes. Or I could be having a major malfunction on my ‘dar.
In any case there are a few parts that stick in one’s brain and just won’t leave, overall a decent piece. Not the deepest pool regarding the lyrics, but I’ve heard much worse.
3. Right between the eyes: Did I say _headed_ in a west-coast feeling? I meant parked in the LA airport and is setting it’s eyes on a beachfront somewhere. Still not a bad song, seems to have the same sort of theme as the last song, but with a more hard-edge to it. I’m not too fond of the chorus, but that’s because it reminds me of that bloody Sheryl crow song that played for ages and I never was able to scrub from my mind. I like a few of the lyrics in this one, and the guitar riffs make me happy in a way they most probably shouldn’t
…oh yes, and she comments “stay alive, my love.” *repeats to self* I will not assume she’s talking about a female in this track, I will not assume she’s talking about a female in this track…
4. Why do you love me: and we’re away from the sand and surf now. a tune wherein the lead singer expound on her flaws in a matter-of-fact way and asks why the recipient of her attentions still has feelings for her.
God, I know I’m going to sound like a sheep for saying this (as this is the track they made a video out of), but I bloody adore this song. Love the melody, and the lyrics (namely the last lines of the first verse and the entire second verse) make me want to whip out my screencaping software and get shots for a Noa icon. This is one of those songs where I wouldn’t mind being called on my wretched voice if someone called me singing it.
It seems like Shirley Manson took the very lovely “Drive me home” From her last album and made it into a more rockish thing; which I don’t mind at all, considering I am overly fond of that track. Most likely I’ll rip this one later and put it up with the other just for comparison.
5. Bleed like me: now Garbage? I know you’re trying to appeal to an emo audience in addition to your normal fans, but would you mind writing things about which you have actually done? Ok, I also know that someone in the group may have self-modified or had issues or had a sin-cleansing/eating disorder; but the way you put it here in the song? Screams of teenage angst. One would think that if the person was writing about these things in hindsight, it would come out as more… adult, and in past tense.
Also? This line: “Doodle takes dad’s scissors to her skin; and when she does, relief comes setting in.” um… no. not scissors; at all. you get points for the euphoria in found clinical studies, but scissors?! (why you gotta make me use bad grammar on you Shirley? Why?)
((edit: seems she did self-modify, which then leads to my reacion of "SCISSORS?!" and me shuddering in a bad way.))
That said, I like the melody to this one, and a one or two of the lyrics catch my ear (namely the religious verse). The others though… this is even too much Emoangst and pretentiousness for me.
6. Metal heart: Another one of those tracks that I just plain like. Like the lyrics more then the tune, but the melody has it’s own merit. A tune where the singer questions some aspects of reality and makes her wishes known on what she would change about herself.
Yeah, _really_ like the lyrics here. Can’t state that enough. Another one I might put up here for listening to.
7. Sex is not the enemy: Not as good as I hoped with a title like that, but it grows on one after a few times. Definitely going to use a part of the lyrics in a Sutekh icon. No need for much explanation on what the song is about. No doubt the “revolution” line is going to be stuck in my head for a bit.
8. It’s all over but the crying: And here I thought I wouldn’t find my gem in this album. This is one of those songs where it’s depressing, yes; but I find myself unable to shuck it away in the “wangst” department. The song has a beauty to it, and Garbage has one or two of these per album, thus ensuring that I’ll keep buying these things until either the band croaks or they lose the ability to remind me of why I treasure my hearing so much.
9. The boys wanna fight: the premise of this one is that despite it all, we women are still getting kicked around, and taking backlash whenever they show an opinion, so lets get pissed (as in drunk) and play their game so that when they start shit we can be blameless when we retaliate.
No. really. And It amuses me, despite some conflicting lyrics. I like this one, I can’t help but smirk whenever I hear it. Another I might post.
10. Why don’t you come over: why does this song remind me a tad of Mello? The tune is lacking in some places, but the words make up for it… sort of. Might post this sucker too.
11. Happy home: every Garbage album has it’s bittersweet/depressing ending song, and this one is no exception. I’m not sure how I feel about this one, as I like the tune to some extent, but the lyrics go over my head on what the song is about. Is the female content with her life? Is she brainwashed into thinking she’s happy with her situation?
Summary: As I like this band, I can’t say that I wasn’t fond of this album, but I do feel that it was missing… something. The first album had the best lyrics out of all of them and the tracks were varied in styles, the second was more consistent in style but had some just plain fun songs, the third one had no less then three pieces that I adored and the style was as varied as the first album, but this one? Eh. I donno, it just feels that the members of the band didn’t want to tread too far away from a safe medium and decided to revisit ideas from other songs. Ah well.
Hn, on the upside with each album the number of references to the alternative lifestyle increases. (as a side note, while in track 10 it sounds like she says “you’d best step off the gas boy” the lyrics booklet has it as ‘girl’… an interesting note considering the song is about a problems in a relationship and ends in “I wash my hands of you”; but that’s just wishful thinking on my part I guess.) I’m not even going to start on “androgyny” from the last album.
Now excuse me, I have to get some sleep andthink of Shirley Manson and any other UK actress my mind comes up with get ready for more of the job-searching.
